QUALCOMM wanted Sony out sometime ago so they could get on with world class manufacturing as a solo operation.Sony learned from QUALCOMM and QUALCOMM learned from Sony. The opportunity now is laid out in a golden road to an even larger N.American market share.QUALCOMM has an huge advantage in the N.American market being first to market with a CDMA phone and presently with the best CDMA ASIC built into there phone line up.Motorola and Nokia are behind in the ACIC race by several generations and will never catch the new intel of telecom QUALCOMM.I don't belive QUALCOMM will sell the hand set division as the tide is turning in there favor and the wind is at there back.QUALCOMM continues to prove ther agility and innovation as evidenced by the new Thin Phone and the coming PDQ.The phone division is needed to drive the CDMA market forward and the phone prices down.QUALCOMM controls the CDMA phone market by being able to discount there phone sales due to the fact that they don't have a royalty expense or an ASIC expense forcing the other hand set makers to lower there prices to compete. This business model is awesome and fulfills Moores law making the technology cheaper and cheaper. The ASIC keeps rolling out the door at a 45 percent margin and the royalties pour in at pure profit.Make no mistake about it this is the Golden Goose if there ever was one.
