Thanks for your response.

I guess I've always read those two verses differently from you. When I read it I think the "mischief" that follows is something that happens after the fruit departed from the mother. And I believe the fruit departing phrase as I read it means a miscarriage and not just a premature birth. Would monetary damages have been assessed for causing a delivery of a child, premature of otherwise? Personally I don't think so. OK I could be wrong but thats my opinion.

I would be more likely to change my opinion on abortion if I ignored historical tradition (as I understand it) and the Bible (again as I understand it), and just decide it should be based on the biological facts. Clearly from the moment of conception, unique biological tissue has been formed. But if this were to be the deciding issue, this would create a lot of practical problems. Like what about contraceptive methods which cause the fertilzed ovum to attach to the uterus. Does the use of IUD's cause a murder each month? So do they and the morning after pill have to be outlawed? And if society decides to treat abortion as murder what penalties is society going to impose on women who have abortions - the death penalty? I know abortions were once illegal. Do you know if the death penalty was imposed on women or doctors then? I suspect that even back in the days when abortion was outlawed, it wasn't treated by the law as murders were. And then there's the rape and incest thing. They couldn't be exceptions, I think. Abortions in these cases would still be murder. And in cases where the woman's life is endangered by the pregnancy . . . Just thinking aloud here. Aloud? You know what I mean.

Well, I'll give this issue some thought. Course you realize my opinion is pretty much meaningless anyway. It ain't gonna make any difference to anyone else.

Good night,

Bruce
