I totally disagree with your synopsis that somehow a premium
item is paid for by the manufacturer. There's always more money
in the full featured products ( for everyone in the chain )
than the stripped down model. This applies whether your talking
about cars or computers the fact that Zip isn't installed in
every machine is precisely due to the extra margin that a
premium item will bring, in other words why give it away when
you can make extra bucks off of it.Check out any of the online
box sellers, the P-III's ( the premium full featured computers )
have Zip built in but the others are add on sales for a premium price.

Dell et,al are making important dollars off extra Zip sales

A short story about what happened with a perspective customer
today. She and her husband came in today wanting to buy a
computer,( first time buyers ) and knew they didn't want the
cheesy inexpensive one, they had to have 96 something ( megs
of ram : ) ) and a Zip drive ( yes, an extra $79.00 ) . True story.
BTW I'm selling a fair number of Zips with my sub $800 systems.

It's in the marketing
