An excellent summary of the issues at hand!

IMHO:

1. Technology will never "force" anyone to do anything. Technology is a collection of artifacts. People make choices. People force issues.

2. The individual's right to privacy needs to be balanced against the group's right to conduct a discussion.

3. A certain amount of individual privacy is forfeited by participating in a public discussion -- one reveals what would be otherwise private thoughts, ideas, and so on, in a public forum the records of which have permanence.

4. The right to privacy does not and should not excuse one from experiencing the consequences of their participation in a public discussion. Accountability to the group becomes superior to privacy as soon as one participates in the activities of the group.

5. Anonymity does not equal privacy. Anonymity is a privilege (whether granted or purchased), while privacy is a right.

6. Courtesy, fair play and justice require notification of the individual when one's right to privacy or one's privilege of anonymity must be forfeited by order of a court of competent jurisdiction or some similar authority.

7. I have purchased a service which includes anonymity. If that anonymity must be breached, I should be notified.
