i think you're right...

lost data only applies to stuff i'm working with. the quote from symantec referred to it as "you could lose information in system files". does that sound like another way of saying "the programs you are working with"?

agree also that sometimes the background apps get "sticky". sometimes i have to hit 'end task' 2-3 times and eventually a dialog pops up saying the program is busy or not responding, would i like to close it? dah! good idea!

unlike you, however, i have encountered probs with leaving background stuff running. several times, in fact... during attempts to install browsers and some symantec software prior to installing systemworks2.0. only reason i say it was the background apps that caused probs was that the install went cleanly after turning them all off. shrug. now i do it without exception.

btw, i had been shutting down everything except explorer, but upon further review... i read where i should be leaving systray running also. i'd gotten away from that. to my knowledge, systray is simply the icons being displayed in the system tray in the lower right corner of the windows taskbar.

btw2, are you getting the systemworks email tips?

btw3, where the heck is wily?

:)
