MobilCom, Germany's No. 2 long distance phone company, will use technology developed by Cisco Systems, the largest maker of Internet equipment, to offer Internet telephone service in coming months.

Cisco's technology will help MobilCom integrate voice and data traffic in one network, the German phone company said. MobilCom is the first European company to get access to the Cisco technology, which makes it possible to make phone calls via the Internet and consequently cut the cost of calls, the company said, adding that it will increase capacity and help to save costs. No financial details were disclosed.

"With the technology, we can decisively help fashion the development on the German telecommunications market and improve our position among our competitors," said Gerhard Schmid, MobilCom's chief executive.

Buedelsdorf, Germany-based MobilCom said last month its mobile phone customers rose 15 percent to more than 1 million in the period, and it carried more than 2 million minutes of long distance calls in May. The company said growth also accelerated in Internet services, an area where MobilCom said it's aiming for a 10 percent market share.

MobilCom wants to offer more Internet-related services to boost revenue as price competition in the long distance market squeezes margins. Schmid said earlier this year he expects future growth to be determined by the Internet business, and has expanded MobilCom's online offerings through acquisitions and partnerships.
