If I understand correctly, oracle's using their entrenched position in one market (its oracle product) to push its way into adjoining areas might qualify it as a gorilla. And I see little downside.

I agree completely. Oracle is the gorilla of the database market. Because all back- and front-office apps rely on a database, they are leveraging their gorillaness in their attempt to become a gorilla in other markets as well. I don't know if they will be successful in becoming a gorilla of one or more new markets, but I do think there is little downside risk.
