Found some of the info

This is from the Standard and Poor's site. spglobal.com

S&P US INDICES
S&P 500 Index (see S&P Global Indices)
Widely regarded as the standard for measuring large-cap U.S. stock market performance, this popular index includes a representative sample of leading companies in leading industries. The S&P 500 is used by 97% of U.S. money managers and pension plan sponsors. Some $700 billion is indexed to the S&P 500.

As for the $180 billion, I think it was from a recent Street.com update on index funds, don't have the link as password protected. I believe the Vanguard fund is around $70 billion itself.

Hope this helps.
