To thread,
Following is the latest version of the Paul Allen's Wired World Master List. From this point forward, I will be posting this list 2-3 times weekly(tentative, depending upon interest).
I will begin each post containing the list with PAWW Master List so that the latest version of the Master List may be easily obtained by scrolling through the "previous 40" posts after linking to the thread. In addition, I'll keep Master List posts strictly "on subject" (i.e. my other comments will be on additional posts) so that if you are not interested in the Master List, you can scroll through to the next post.
Once the list becomes fairly comprehensive, I will place an asterisk next to each company whose data has been updated since the previous Master List. This will assist in identifying changes/additions to data.
Please note that the Master List cannot succeed without your participation. I am more than happy to compile the data, but acquisition of the data is too much for one person. In particular, the "PA/VV stake" and "Invstmt Mil" (new column) is work done easily by many hands, but quite a daunting task for one person. I will gauge your interest/acceptance of the master list by your participation and contribution.
This list is intended to be a concise, easily scanned qualitative analysis of the Wired World holdings. As such, absolute accuracy takes a lower priority than completeness of data. As an example, a recent post provided a link to an MCOM article. In the article it was stated that VV's investment of $300M increased it's stake to 49%, while a $300M investment by MCI WorldComm resulted in a 38% stake. Extrapolating, $300M x 49/38 = $387M. Probably not totally accurate, but close enough for the purposes of this analysis.
In case you're wondering where I'm going with this list, I hope to compile a database from this list that will enable us to easily extract reports of interest (i.e. investment by category, investment by calendar year, etc, etc.). With the coming (CommTouch) Email system, it should be easy to forward the data file to members of the thread for their own use.
Note that I am compiling an archive of links related to stake and $investment. If you provide a link with your data, I will store it for future reference.
One final note: The PA Wired World website re-established its "investments" web page today; PCLN and HLYW are definitely absent. I have left both on the master list for the time being.
