Lane, the No. 2 executive at the world's largest database software maker, told representatives of Compaq and HP that he was the wrong person for the job, said Oracle spokeswoman Anna del Rosario. He told them he wasn't interested, she said.
Houston-based Compaq, the No. 1 personal computer maker, has been searching for a new CEO since it forced Eckhard Pfeiffer to resign in April. Palo Alto, California-based HP, the world's second-largest computer maker, has been looking for a successor to CEO Lewis Platt, who plans to retire next year.
Representatives of Compaq and HP couldn't immediately be reached to comment.
Lane often is cited as a candidate for CEO openings because of his extensive experience in the technology field and his success in turning Oracle into the second-largest independent software company, with a market value of $56 billion.
Continental Airlines president Greg Brenneman has also withdrawn his name from Compaq's list of candidates for its CEO opening.
