It's old but it's relevant.

Matsushita to use Sun's Java technology for consumer electronics equipment
2.07 p.m. ET (1907 GMT) December 15, 1998
TOKYO — Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. of Japan on Tuesday teamed up with Sun Microsystems Inc. to use the computer company's Java software technology in a wide range of consumer electronics products.

Java, developed by Sun, is a versatile computer programming language used widely for Internet applications. It is aimed at eventually letting software developers write applications for any computer, not just the Windows system found on most PCs.

Matsushita is considering selling a new class of consumer electronics devices equipped with Java, including digital TV devices, audio-video equipment and home appliances. Products could go on sale starting in 2000.

Matsushita is one of many Japanese electronics companies developing consumer products that incorporate computer features, such as televisions and stereos that can exchange information with each other.

For its part, Mountain View, Calif.-based Sun is competing against software giant Microsoft Corp. for a foothold in consumer electronics.
