The Turks and the Armenians had land conflicts. The Germans were economically shattered, and paranoid after WWI. The Guatemala conflict was also about land.

I would separate out China, Cambodia and Russia killing their own citizens- this was to consolidate power- power over the machinery of the state- which was about controlling resources and re-dividing them. I would argue that people do not give up their capital without a fight- so in those cases the state had to kill to subdue the population into allowing the state to redistribute the wealth. It is also true that the most educated often fail to see the benefits in aggressive redistribution- and they aren't good followers for demagogues. So it only makes sense to get rid of them.

Idi Amin was insane. I don't know how to explain him.
