intel's game has always been to improve performance. the difference now is that
powerful machines are so inexpensive that the bang of improved performance is not
worth the buck for 90+% of the market.

I must respond to this. I think the performance of the current top of Intel's line of processors is not nearly enough performance - for me anyway. I have specific applications in mind. Let me elaborate.

Currently there is a slow growth in the number of PC's placed in autos, for things such as gps mapping. That is nice and current pc's do a fine job at that. Now, I understand RDRAM is supposed to have a benefit in high bandwidth applications, e.g. streaming video. One streaming video application I have in mind I have seen in action - only problem is it takes the entire van filled with processing equipment to make it work. This van is able to drive itself down the road - it can 'watch' the road and follow it with nothing special done to the road itself. It watches for other cars, pedestrians, etc. It does so with video cameras. Now that is a streaming video application.

You can call me names if you want to ("you power user, you!") but I will not be satisfied with processing power until this system can be put on one board and mounted under the hood. I want to get in my car in the morning and say "take me to work" - and have it do it.

Silly, huh.
