In time this application may have a SOFC replacing the diesel engine....The trucks would be stealthy all the time......here's hoping.......raisin 07/09/1999 - Army Aims at 75% Cut in Fuel Use via Hybrid EVs Warren, Michigan - Looking to reduce its fuel usage by 75 percent by 2020, the U.S. Army is working with the private sector to develop hybrid-electric vehicles because they are more fuel-efficient and can operate in a stealthy, all-electric mode, reports Soldiers Online. Army technicians are currently testing a converted five-ton truck at the National Automotive Center, part of the U.S Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command facility in Warren, Michigan. The six-wheel-drive truck uses a diesel engine in conjunction with a 120-kilowatt generator to provide power for an electric drivetrain with two alternating-current motors. The Army's program manager for the hybrid-EV project, Robert Crow, says 'Using hybrid-electric propulsion can reduce vehicle fuel consumption by 25-30 percent.' He said he expects hybrid vehicles, meaning those with more than one power source, will most likely fill the majority of the Army's land-transport needs after 2020.
