Capital One Visa is offering me bill pay - although the billers seemed limited to about 50, plus I could contact any other biller and ask them if they'd work thru Capital One. Not bloody likely that I'll do this footwork for them and have to pay them to boot! Nevertheless, I believe that a younger generation of bank customers is not so averse to paying fees and that programs such as these may gain more customers than we expect.

I recently had a startling experience with funds transfer. One day before credit card payment was due, I realized I had forgotten to mail it. Called the card company and told them I had just written a check, but not yet mailed it. No problem, she said, for $5 we can process this electronically. Fair enough. Then she asks for the check number?! Gave her the complete number (bank and account code) and a few seconds later she said it was done. My monthly check statement even showed me that check number 4455 had been processed, even though no such check existed! How do they do it?
