Here is some info for you and all to read from Hoovers on "ZANY"
ZANY BRAINY, INC You don't have to wear a propeller beanie to shop at Zany Brainy. The Wynnewood, Pennsylvania-based educational toy store chain has about 80 stores in 20-plus states, primarily in strip malls. Zany Brainy promotes nonviolent, gender-neutral toys with an educational emphasis. Its more than 15,000 products include toys, games, puzzles, audio- and videotapes, software, books, arts and crafts, dolls, plush toys, and electronic toys. Founder David Schlessinger, Vulcan Ventures (an investment firm controlled by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen), and French retailer Carrefour own approximately 4%, 10.5%, and 16% of the company, respectively. The colorful stores, averaging more than 10,000 sq. ft., are significantly smaller than superstores such as Toys "R" Us (averaging 40,000 sq. ft.). The stores are highly interactive; children can test out a variety of toys and computer games at play stations, watch videos at a small theater, and read in reading areas. The stores also host a number of events, including author readings, concerts, and workshops. Excluding books (which account for about 12% of sales), only about 30% of Zany Brainy's toys overlap with larger toy chains such as Toys "R" Us; many of its goods are imported from smaller makers.
Zany Brainy tries to hire employees with a special interest in children (former teachers, children's librarians, parents) and refers to its employees as "kidsultants."
Despite recording losses, Zany Brainy continued its rapid growth, adding 32 stores in 1997 and 1998. Zany Brainy went public in June 1999, with plans to use the proceeds to open 25 more stores in 1999 and pay off debt.
regards Giota P.S. Zany is going to launch its own online store later this year! |
