MSFT doesn't care. They want to cover all the bases.

Oh, I think they do care. They've made protective investments in other areas, but their major focus for years has been on cable.

I agree (and so stated) that they benefit greatly from open internet access, no matter who provides it. The disadvantage comes when access is provided through a gatekeeper like AOL since that gatekeeper attempts to close off access to the "open" internet and keep users away from sites like MSN that aren't willing to pay for a privileged place on the gatekeeper system.

But this whole cable thing is a joke anyway as the cable operators do not have the bandwidth to open up the cable to all those that would want to be onn it.

Of course. As I said, that's why Microsoft would lose some of the value of its early cable investments if the MSOs were forced to open their systems too early. They don't have the technology to provide open access along with all the other things they've promised to provide.
