Now ask an SI member that has been here for at least 2 years and your answer may be quite different.

That might be true, but there are a couple of things at work.

One of them is a general rule of graphic design: Long-time readers do not like change. Any change.

It happens with web sites, magazines, newspapers, TV news shows and any other graphic medium. Folks become comfortable with the old look and feel and become distracted by changes. They will lash out at the changes in some interesting ways, but mostly the message is simply, "I don't want anything to change."

And there's also a certain nostalgia at work here. There are some users who resent the presence of anyone who wasn't here whenever they arrived. Maybe they're right. I didn't read it two or three years ago, and certainly didn't read it on Compuserve (since I was a GEnie guy back then). Maybe it was a much better forum back then. Perhaps it should revert to its very first look and kick off anyone who wasn't a member then. Maybe.

This is a change in the design that will make SI more appealing to new users -- to someone coming upon SI for the first time. Those who prefer to discourage new users would rather keep a look that shuns "newbies".

[But maybe they're right. Many threads on Usenet were destroyed in '94 when AOL opened the floodgates of their inane users on the system. Perhaps the same thing happened here. Maybe everyone who was here before is indeed wiser and smarter than everyone who has arrived since. Maybe. Clearly, though, some of those old timers combine a bad eye with a loud mouth. Maybe there aren't enough of that persuasion among the newbies.]
