Howard: I am intimately familiar with this issue as I am situated about 38,000 ft from my CO. PacBell is presently undertaking a beta-test program that will involve the deployment of NGDLCs at several remote sites that are, or will be, fiber-fed from the CO. Two COs in the State have been selected; one of which serves my residence. The pilot program has rec'd SBC corporate approval & is now in the early stages of conceptual design. Provisioning will be limited to those areas served by a pair gain system -- which mine is. I estimate provisioning of DSL on my lines by year-end. If the program is successful, I envisioned broader deployment of this cutting edge technology in other select areas served by PacBell over the course of next year. Typically, these will be in areas where there is "expressed demand"(aka upper-income areas). Since your situated in tech-saavy San Jose, I would expect a more aggressive effort in that part of the state. Alternatively, you may want to go with cable when it becomes available.
