Here's a list of some important events to watch for:

Monday

Newspaper giant Gannett (GCI) is expected to report earnings per share of 86 cents a share,
compared to 78 cents a share a year ago.
Motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson (HDI) is expected to earn 43 cents a share, compared to
36 cents a share a year ago.
After the close, chip maker Vitesse Semiconductor (VTSS) is expected to report earnings of
23 cents a share, compared to 18 cents a share a year ago.
Chip equipment maker Applied Materials (AMAT) holds an analysts' meeting in San
Francisco.
Tommy Hilfiger (TOM) shares split 2-for-1.

Tuesday

LJR Redbook reports weekly retail sales.
After the close, chip king Intel (INTC) is expected to report earnings per share of 53 cents,
compared to 33 cents a year ago.
Dow components AlliedSignal (ALD) and International Paper (IP) are scheduled to report
quarterly earnings. AlliedSignal is expected to earn 70 cents a share, compared to 61 cents a
share a year ago. International Paper is projected to earn 23 cents a share, compared to 29
cents a share a year ago.
There are a couple of brokerage companies reporting quarterly results. Analysts expect Merrill
Lynch (MER) to earn $1.46 a share, compared to $1.31 a year ago. PaineWebber (PWJ) is
expected to earn 94 cents a share, compared to 82 cents a share a year ago.
After the close, cellular phone giant Motorola (MOT) is expected to earn 41 cents a share,
compared to a penny a share a year ago.

Wednesday

The U.S. Department of Labor will report the producer price index for June at 8:30 a.m. ET. The
PPI is a closely watched measure of prices of goods at the wholesale level.
The Department of Commerce will report retail sales for June at 8:30 a.m. ET. This report is a
widely followed indicator of consumer spending patterns.
PC maker Apple Computer (AAPL) is expected to report quarterly earnings after the close. The
Street expects the company to earn 64 cents a share, compared to 50 cents a share a year
ago.
Online broker Ameritrade (AMTD) is expected to report earnings per share of three cents, the
same as a year ago, after the close.
Internet service provider Earthlink Networks (ELNK) is expected to lose 22 cents a share,
compared to a loss of 20 cents a share a year ago.
Banking company Fleet Financial (FLT) is expected to earn 73 cents a share, compared to 64
cents a share a year ago.
Auto maker Ford (F) is expected to earn $1.95 a share, compared to $1.91 a share a year ago.
Photography company Polaroid (PRD) is expected to earn 33 cents a share, compared to three
cents a share a year ago.
Cable giant Time Warner (TWX) is expected to earn six cents a share, compared to two cents
a share a year ago.

Thursday

The Department of Labor will report the consumer price index for June at 8:30 a.m. ET. This is
an important indicator of prices of goods sold and of inflation.
Among cyclical companies, Dow component Caterpillar (CAT) is expected to report earnings
per share of 81 cents, compared to $1.20 a year ago. AK Steel (AKS) is forecast to earn 31
cents a share, compared to 56 cents a share a year ago. Alcan Aluminum (AL) is expected to
earn 25 cents a share, compared to 44 cents a share a year ago. Champion International
(CHA) is expected to earn 25 cents a share, compared to 26 cents a share a year ago.
A bunch of tech companies are reporting quarterly earnings after the close. Disk drive maker
Seagate Technology (SEG)is expected to earn 36 cents a share, compared to 11 cents a share
a year ago. Internet software maker Inktomi (INKT) is expected to lose 12 cents a share,
compared to a loss of 13 cents a share a year ago. Chip maker Microchip Technology
(MCHP) is projected to earn 38 cents a share, compared to 31 cents a share a year ago.
Auto maker General Motors (GM) is expected earn $2.56 a share, compared to 47 cents a
share a year ago.
Consumer products maker Gillette (G) is expected to earn 26 cents a share, comapred to 33
cents a share a year ago.
Medical devices maker Guidant (GDT) is expected to earn 33 cents a share, a penny higher
than a year ago.
Toy maker Hasbro (HAS) is expected to earn a dime a share, compared to three cents a share
a year ago.

Friday

The Federal Reserve reports industrial production for June at 9:15 a.m. ET.
Tools and furnishings maker Black & Decker (BDK) is expected to report earnings per share of
77 cents, compared to 57 cents a year ago.
Beverage giant Coca-Cola (KO) is expected to earn 38 cents a share, compared to 47 cents a
share a year ago.
Dow component Goodyear Tire (GT) is expected to earn 45 cents a share, compared to $1.25
a share a year ago.
Toy maker Mattel (MAT) is expected to earn 15 cents a share, compared to 20 cents a share a
year ago.
Brokerage Charles Schwab (SCH) is expected to earn 17 cents a share, compared to nine
cents a share a year ago.
