6. The ability to shift easily and quickly to a chat mode would be terrific. Instead, many of the people use other tools such as ICQ or AOL's message service. Why not offer their own integrated system with the site?

I agree that a live chat client could be useful on many threads. The web-based clubhouse alternative isn't quite the same. I'm not familiar with the AOL messenger, but I have used AOL's other client, ICQ.

Both seem to be more feature-rich than what's necessary for a live-chat client. There are several clients available. One of the best I've seen is Volano chat (http://www.volano.com/). It's a Java client that works well on either PC or Mac. It's used by A.B. Watley and E*Trade to provide their customers with interactive chat.

Offering such an option might decrease the volume of posting on some threads, but I think that would be a net gain. Live interaction on live chat can build an even stronger sense of community since folks can engage in a kind of banter that's inappropriate on the stock threads. Those who wish to discuss tick-by-tick movement in a stock benefit from the quick interaction of a live client.
