>>...The instance you cite, of using the posting against a recent immigrant, is interesting. I am not sure how it would bear, since it is a private abuse, although the possibility is set up by the public posting. I will get back to you....<<

It seems to me that this is precisely what we don't want: I believe everyone has a god-given right to be obnoxious and to use whatever they can to persuade someone else about the truth or error of any world view. I just think that the state has to be careful about not giving ammunition to one side or another.

>>But the last question is perhaps the most interesting: Why must the schools be the battleground? Because they are integral to the process of cultural transmission, and either re- enforce or erode things taught elsewhere. Perhaps privatization would solve the problem, but that is some ways off...<<

Your suggestion that privatization is a solution to this particular 'problem' strikes me as strange. The idea of having a constitution is to impose certain principles on a nation's public life. To privatize public schools in order to remove schools from the operation of one of those principles--the separation of church and state--would suggests that it is the principle that you reject. It seems to me that a more acceptable course of action would be to agitate for a constitutional amendment on this point. I suspect, however, that you have other reasons for advocating the privatization of schools that have nothing to do with religion. Some of these may be good, but in my opinion, to do so in order to avoid the separation of church and state is not one of them.
