You are mingling OS features and hardware features.

I agree that the i86 architecture sucks. You know something is wrong when your handheld calculator has more cpu registers than your brand-new high-powered "workstation".

Those interested in a novel OS design should investigate EROS, the "Extremely Reliable Operating System".
It completely eliminates the filesystem abstraction from the OS, which is a source of many reliability and security problems in other OS's. The entire machinestate is "snapshotted" every five minutes. You can pull the power-cord out of one of these machines in the middle of operation. Plugging it back in will boot you back to your previous state (complete with any open windows) in about 30 seconds.
Eros also uses a different "capability" security model which is superior to the ACL security model found in Linux or NT.
