CHAMPION TECHNOLOGY TO PROVIDE FREE INTERNET ACCESS TO AEON CARDHOLDERS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hong Kong (8 July 1999) -- Champion Technology Holdings Limited (SEHK:092) announced today that its subsidiary, Digital Hong Kong Limited (Digital HK), and Aeon Credit Service (Asia) Company Limited (AEON) (SEHK:900), have teamed up to promote e-Commerce services in Hong Kong.
Under the Partnership, Digital HK will offer free Internet access and free e-mail accounts to all AEON cardholders, currently in excess of 500,000. Digital HK will also create on-line application booths on its e-malls to facilitate the processing of AEON credit card applications, as well as creating the AEON credit card payment button on all the storefronts of Digital Hong Kong. The two companies will engage in joint campaigns to promote and market e-Commerce services.
According to Paul Kan, Chairman of Champion Technology and e-Chairman of Digital HK, "Champion is pleased to work with premium consumer-based companies such as AEON, which is known for its high quality services and innovative programmes in the fast growing field of consumer credit finance services. As we are building our e-commerce infrastructure and plan to roll out our CSP (Commerce Service Provider) services shortly before the end of this year, we shall be aggressively acquiring incremental consumer traffic to our e-malls for the benefit of all the merchants who will be plugging onto our e-shopping platform."
Mr. Kazuhide Kamitani, Managing Director of AEON, added, "Through developing a network on the Internet, we intend to distribute monthly statements and shopping information to our credit cardholders. As our customers are mainly in the age bracket of 20 to 40 with high spending power and are Internet ready, the co-operation with Champion enables us to speed up our customer services programme upgrade." The response to the launch of the AEON Hello Kitty MasterCard and the AEON Jusco MasterCard has been overwhelming, resulting in over 30 percent increase in the company's total credit cardholder base.
In May this year, Digital HK announced the launch of its e-Commerce Community Awareness Programme (e-CCAP) which aims at promoting digital literacy and community-wide participation and usage of e-commerce. In less than two months, the e-CCAP has published two volumes under The Hong Kong e-Commerce Studies Series, and has engaged in campus recruitment, enrolment of e-Angels, and promotion of Business Start-up Scheme at nine of the local universities and vocational institutes. It has also sponsored three training programmes on developing web-based business, web publishing, and computer animation.
Champion Technology welcomes the just-released Second Report of the Chief Executive's Commission on Innovation and Technology, as well as yesterday's launch of the Information Technology Entrepreneur Programme. All these initiatives are similar in vision, and will result in our long-held goal of a digital Hong Kong.
