PC unit sales rose 35 percent in May

Published Saturday, July 10, 1999, in the San Jose Mercury News

Unit sales of personal computers sold in retail stores climbed 35 percent in May as revenue rose 11 percent, driven by growth in sales of machines costing less than $1,000, a research firm said Friday. The average selling price fell just 2 percent to $908 from $928 in April, according to PC Data Corp., compared with a 19 percent slide in April. Still, the average price in May is well below the $1,127 average price of a year ago. Unit shipments of PCs that cost less than $1,000 more than doubled in May from a year ago.
