RMiethe: I'm not 100% certain, but I believe that there is nothing inherently special about spread spectrum technology that would allow it greater throughput capability than other media.

Spread spectrum radios "frequency hop" in rapid succession between many different channels within the 900 MHz portion of the spectrum. That's why the technology is allowed to operate without a license. (900 MHz cordless phones are spread spectrum devices for instance.)

But, bandwidth is bandwidth. And, other than the frequency hopping characteristic, spread spectrum technology throughput should be identical to what is achievable with normal hardwired or fixed-frequency wireless circuits.

I do remember from my college days that one can easily calculate the maximum data transfer rate achievable for any given circuit bandwidth. But, I don't remember the exact equation (maybe someone else does?) And, I don't know the bandwidth of the ricochet modems, although that information should be readily available from Metricom.
