By the way, totalitarianism was originally applied to fascism. It was meant to indicate the subordination of all interests to the state. Originally, the Fascist Party was anti- clerical, but as a practical matter Mussolini eased tensions with the Church. Apart from that, all institutions within society were supposed to exist to nourish the Nation! Leftist disclaimed the label, because state power was supposed to be a temporary expedient, and because the use of the nation to promote socialism would eventually give way to the internationalism of communism. However, Stalinism was so egregious, that the non- communist Left stuck the label on it, and pointed out its affinities to fascism.....
