Congo Cease-fire To Be Signed Saturday -- Chiluba

LUSAKA (Reuters) - Zambian President Frederick Chiluba announced Thursday that African heads
of state would converge on Lusaka Saturday to sign a cease-fire deal to end the war in the
Democratic Republic of the Congo.

''On Saturday this week African heads of state, plus the belligerents in the Congo war, will
meet in Lusaka to sign a very comprehensive cease-fire agreement,'' Chiluba told a news
conference.

Chiluba's announcement came a day after African defense and foreign ministers endorsed a
draft cease-fire document which called for a halt to hostilities and the withdrawal of
foreign forces from the Congo. The war has sucked in armies from at least six African states.

Referring to a separate deal to end the war in Sierra Leone, Chiluba said the outbreak of
peace was the dawn of a new era for the world's poorest continent.

Congo erupted last August after mutinous soldiers, backed by Uganda and Rwanda, took up arms
to topple President Laurent Kabila after accusing him of corruption, incompetence and a
failure to chart out a political program for the former Zaire.

Chiluba spoke as Kabila arrived in Harare to consult his chief war ally, Zimbabwean President
Robert Mugabe, ahead of the signing ceremony Saturday.
