Thomas, gee, if Motorola (and others) have been secretly selling zillions of x86 CPUs without my knowing it, then I guess I don't know what I'm talking about. But since this discussion has so obviously been about x86 CPUs, then its not me who is clueless <g>.
But what the hey, lets compare Motorola and INTC (since I have no idea what others you are referring to).
The current PPC750 has been topped out at 400MHz for some time now. Hardly the "blowing doors" process leadership you claim. Now on pure performance, I hate to quote benchmarks but here is an interesting comparison.
By MOTs own measure, the PPC750/400 delivers 18.8 SPECint95 and 12.2 SPECfp95. motorola.com
The PII/333 delivers 12.8 and 9.1, respectively. developer.intel.com developer.intel.com
But, gee whiz, notice the linearity of performance to MHZ for this benchmark.
By my estimation, the PIII/550 yields 21 and 15, respectively. This could be outdone by 10% or so by MOT if they could deliver a 550Mhz version of this CPU with their superior <GGG> process technology. But they haven't delivered a speed upgrade for 6 months. Makes you wonder if they aren't hiring AMD process guys <g>.
