<My bet is that Merced will be very competitive with Alpha in floating point - right out of the chute.> Good floating point cannot hurt, but I would be concerned more about transactions per second and performance of Oracle. Neither of these may be directly sensitive to floating point performance. The Alpha floating point may be matched by the K7 with 4MB of cache in some benchmarks. Time will tell how close.
