The 'undiscovered' BV has been here for a while. The analysts knew
ALSC had a 15% share in USC, but no value could be assigned until it
was bought or IPO'd. When UMC decided that ALSCs share of USC was
worth 4Xs ALSCs original investment(in UMC stock), that's when the
analyst's ears perked up.
UMC would not have decided to buy out their partners in USC unless
they thought the semi cycle was definitely turning UP. Capacity is
getting tight and prices for chips are rising, making the buyout of
USC worthwhile for UMC.
We can only guess what ALSCs Chartered Semiconductor investment is
worth, BUT at 4Xs it's another $200M or $5/sh. Chartered is NOT set
for a buyout or IPO yet, AFAIK.
