The interview was with Charlie Rose and Bill Gates on PBS, 3/21/97. Both of them did an excellent job. I like Charlie's tough, but never mean spirited, questions. He asked Bill about the NC. Gates was very much against it. Charlie tried to tie his up to 90% O/S market share with an enormous power to control its introduction, for example. Gates readily admitted his O/S domination over everyone else's, but contended the consumer could simply reject his O/S and Microsoft would have to keep pleasing customers or they would be out. There were many more Gates visions which were quite good, btw. Charlie showed clips from Gates competitors, Ellison, Andreeson, and then a complementing Grove. Gates did reply that he does stay focussed and relentlessly tries to win. There was more.
The essence of this thread I am trying to start was reiterated by Charlie. Is it good for this country for one man to have so much power? This is the essence of the anti-trust laws, they came into being because of past abuses, (I don't think Gates is abusing power now) and should the anti-trust principles be followed here. It is really that simple.
