RDM - Re: "Good floating point cannot hurt, but I would be concerned more about transactions per second and performance of Oracle. Neither of these may be directly sensitive to floating point performance."

You are suffering from Tunnel Vision.

The FPU enhancements are designed into the IA64 so that it will serve as a HIGH END WORKSTATION CPU.

The TPS of Oracle, etc. should be a no brainer - Intel x86 CPUs already eshow excellent performance in these specs - so Merced should hold its own.

Re: "The Alpha floating point may be matched by the K7 with 4MB of cache in some benchmarks. "

Sure it will, sure it will.

And if it doesn't, you can always pray that the 8 MB version will !

Check AMD's web site - the laughALON BENCHMARKS are posted there for your convenience.
