Vivek Paul, ex-GE man joins Wirpo as Vice Chairman.

Vivek Paul, 41, graduated from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, in 1980, and is an MBA from the University of Massachusetts, USA. He joined Pepsico in 1982 and held several responsibilities with a focus on international finance and mergers and acquisitions. In 1985, he joined Bain and Co., USA, a leading top management consulting organization where he helped establish their acquisition and integration practice, and developed a purchasing cost reduction model that Bain adopted as a general practice for other projects.

Vivek Paul joined GE in 1989 and Wipro GE Medical Systems Ltd. in early 1990. He became the President and CEO of Wipro GE in 1993, with additional responsibility as a member of the Corporate Executive Council and Chairman of the Sales and Marketing Council of Wipro Corporation. During his tenure at Wipro GE, Sales grew to $ 55 million and Profit After Tax to $ 4 million. Wipro GE, the joint venture company that started operations in 1990, became a major threat to Siemens which had been operating in the South Asia market for over 30 years. The domestic market share of Wipro GE grew to 25%, and exports in Software and Ultrasound Systems from Wipro GE grew aggressively.

In 1996, Vivek Paul was promoted as Global Head of GE's Global Computerized Tomography business at Milwaukee, USA. During the last 3 ½ years that he has led GE's Global CT business, his focus on cost and mix management using Six Sigma principles has raised a successful business from the 5% to 6% variable cost productivity range to the 8% to 10% range, lifting margins by 6 points. Vivek Paul pioneered the use of Design for Six Sigma in GE to launch the LightSpeed CT Scanner, deemed today by medical professionals and international media as the biggest breakthrough in a decade. This and other segment focused product launches helped GE gain market share globally against tough competition, while sparking a growth in the overall market.
