I believe that FDR's personal decision to save England from Hitler and China from Japan was the principal reason for the U.S. entering world war II. The pro-communist left was very important. The ridiculous state of American armed forces would have led a rational leader to avoid all conflict instead of provoking the Japanese in the summer of 41 by freezing assets (virtually a declaration of war) or sending the fleet to protect convoys from German submarines in the fall of '41. Whatever FDR thought about the necessity (and I agree that it was great) he was willing to take awful risks. But I feel that he was the major cause, and it was based on culture and "blood is thicker than water" (Admiral Simms controversial toast before we entered World War I.
