Why align to Christ if not to his Church on Earth, which he instituted and declared legal by his own resurrected mouth. But I digress, for I am much like you in that I too read as much as I can and look for answers in other religions' (not just Christian) writings. I guess I understand that Organized religion is political but disagree that that is all they are. The agenda set out for individuals within organized religion help aid not only the political objectives of the religion but in most cases form a good basis for further insight into oneself which one would otherwise be ignorant of.
(ps. if all answers are within why would you have to read anyone else's writings... just a thought)

As far as this might pertain to the Nephilim, I think that they were pretty much a created story much like the boogie man (but wouldn't disagree with one that spoke to me ... lol). Most likely made up to scare persons into submitting to self-denile, Friday night fasting, and other more crude cultist behavior which early Judaism practiced (not to mention that they got half their rituals from egyptian pagan festivals to begin with) anyways, have a good day.

ps. thinking about starting a new thread - what story does the Bible tell if God does not exist (just for all the athiests and devil's advocates out there)... could be amusing.
