Com21 Announces Intent to Enter Wireless Broadband Market Business Wire - July 12, 1999 08:13 NEW ORLEANS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 12, 1999--
Company Will Leverage Technology Platform to Deliver High Speed, Integrated Voice and Data Communications to Homes and Businesses
Com21, Inc., (Nasdaq:CMTO), a leading supplier of system solutions for the broadband access market, today announced its intent to enter into the emerging wireless market. The Company will leverage its cable broadband technology to enable wireless operators the ability to provide high speed, integrated voice and data communications to homes and businesses.
The announcement was made at Com21's booth No. 332 at the annual Wireless Communication Association's Exhibit and Conference held here, July 12-14.
Com21 intends to leverage its ComUNITY Access(R) System, as the broadband platform for wireless communications. The Com21 system is a robust end-to-end solution consisting of ComPORT(R) cable modems, the ComCONTROLLER(R) headend and software system. The ComUNITY Access System has radio frequency capabilities with robust downstream demodulation and upstream modulation to provide performance in the harshest environments. Com21 has deployed over 600 ComUNITY Access Systems worldwide as of the quarter end March 31, 1999.
Com21 has successfully completed limited trials over the past six months that included employees and local business people in "Silicon Valley." In this trial, the ComUNITY headend system was placed on top of Mount Allison in San Jose, California, and supported two-way, high-speed data access within a 20 mile radius, covering most of the valley. The Com21 ComPORT(R) cable modem and transceiver/antenna equipment dishes were set-up at people's homes.
Jane Zeletes, vice president of Business Development, Com21 said, "Our integrated voice and data platform is ideal for wireless broadband communications domestically, and especially as a communications vehicle for the international market where wired communications are not an option."
The Company plans to work with suppliers, channel partners, and key alliances in the transmission, wireless and satellite markets to extend and enhance its broadband wireless offering. |
