VeriSign and IRE Join Forces to Accelerate Deployment of Comprehensive VPN Security Policy; Partnership Provides Customers Integrated VPN/PKI Solutions

BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 12, 1999--Information Resource Engineering, Inc. (IRE) (Nasdaq:IREG), a leading provider of Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology and solutions for secure business communications, and VeriSign (Nasdaq:VRSN), the world's leading provider of Internet trust services, today announced a strategic relationship that includes sales and marketing programs to offer customers integrated solutions for their VPN and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) requirements. As part of the alliance, IRE will be referencing VeriSign digital certificate services in an effort to accelerate the implementation of VPN and PKI solutions and simplify deployment to end users.

IRE will continue to enhance its comprehensive line of SafeNet(TM) VPN products to make it easier for users to establish a public key infrastructure using VeriSign's digital certificates. IRE will also provide customers quick and easy access to free evaluation certificates through the VeriSign OnSite for IPSec Test Drive program. The two companies will participate in joint marketing efforts including seminars, teleconferences, interoperability trials, and web-based promotions to educate enterprises about comprehensive security solutions.

"The marriage of IRE's user-friendly VPN client software with VeriSign's integrated PKI platform provides customers a combined VPN and PKI solution that is easy to deploy and maintain," said Mary Anderson, vice president of marketing for VeriSign. "As the most trusted name in digital certificates, VeriSign is pleased to partner with a leading provider of VPN solutions to offer our customers comprehensive security that addresses the full range of their enterprise needs."

Digital certificates are an essential element of transacting business over the Internet. Digital certificates provide a way to authenticate identities and enable secure communications for VPN access and other e-commerce applications.

IRE and VeriSign have worked closely over the past six months to provide answers for customers who are wrestling with the need to reconcile their Certificate Authority (CA) and VPN requirements. In January, the two companies demonstrated the integration of IRE's SafeNet/Soft-PK with VeriSign's OnSite solution, offering users comprehensive enterprise-wide security for remote access VPN applications.
