(COMTEX)B: DATAMETRICS SYSTEMS: Datametrics ViewPoint monitors NT, UNIX, OpenVMS & Unisys

JUL 12, 1999, M2 Communications - Datametrics Systems, provider of enterprise-wide multi-platform performance analysis solutions, has set up European headquarters in Leatherhead, Surrey. The company has been in the UK since 1997 and has now centralised its European operations here with responsibility for sales and support in all European markets.

Datametrics, a subsidiary of the US Nasdaq-quoted company Zitel, is the manufacturer of ViewPoint, a performance monitoring, analysis and management product which monitors cpu, memory, I/O and disk utilisation on several platforms, including Windows NT, UNIX, OpenVMS and Unisys.

"Our customers tell us that the number of servers required is mushrooming," commented Tony Dee, sales & marketing manager of Datametrics. "Where once they thought they needed one or two servers to run their operations, now they are finding they need multiple server clusters. The growing use of NT as mail and database servers, which require multiple servers across multiple sites, is certainly a good example of how this is happening. It has become increasingly important to these users to monitor what's going on with their servers in a structured way. No longer are they just the workgroup servers in the corner, now, in many cases, they are the cornerstone of the business.

"The current revision of ViewPoint, version 5.1, has been developed to monitor exactly these types of systems. ViewPoint is an out-of-box solution, supplied ready configured to monitor, analyse and report on the most common activities and situations. Once installed, the ViewPoint data collectors gather operating system metrics from each server and automatically build historical trace files for immediate reporting and analysis. Within hours of installation, organisations can see immediate results and benefits."

About ViewPoint 5.1

ViewPoint 5.1 contains a number of tools designed to investigate, monitor, analyse and report on the performance of cpu's, memory, I/O and disks. Historical analyses can also be produced and the product has a direct, OLE link into common Windows applications such as MS-Word, so that graphics and management reports can be produced. ViewPoint alerts the operator if performance parameters are exceeded and has several analysis tools that can correlate activity against overloads and suggest solutions. In addition, ViewPoint has a capacity planning module which allows users to model their systems and perform 'What if?'queries. Although NT and UNIX are the most popular platforms for
performance management, Datametrics recognises that most organisations have multiple legacy platforms and has designed ViewPoint to support these. The product was designed so that it could be set up and used without reference to the documentation.

Biographies

Reg Webb, President European Operations

Reg Webb was born in 1949, and studied chemistry before beginning his career in data processing operations in the late sixties. He rapidly moved into programming and systems design and in the early seventies Reg worked for four years at Rotaprint Ltd., as systems software designer and chief programmer. In 1976 he secured the position of manager, systems and programming, with a software house in Bermuda, where he met Julian Palmer.

On his return to England in 1980, Reg worked with Julian as IT manager at Shipping Company, Gotaas-Larsen. Reg led a $5 million system development from obsolete batch-based systems to fully integrated database online real-time accounting systems. As a result of these systems Gotaas-Larsen were able to reduce administrative staff by 50 percent and produce monthly management accounts within five days of month end - previously they had taken up to 30 working days. During the fourteen years of growing Palmer & Webb Systems, Reg concentrated on the financial, sales and commercial functions as well as maintaining a keen interest in technology.

Julian Palmer, Chief Technology Officer

Julian Palmer began his computing career in 1971, in a predominantly IBM mainframe environment. By 1974 he had progressed through operations management and had become a data centre operations manager. In 1977 Julian moved to Bermuda to run a computer bureau operation using
Burroughs equipment. In Bermuda, Julian developed the MANAGER software, which provided IBM job management centralisation on a Unisys mainframe. Julian then returned to England in 1980 and formed Palmer and Webb Systems with Reg Webb, to market and sell the MANAGER software.

Tony Dee, Sales & Marketing Manager

Tony Dee studied for HND Mechanical and Production Engineering at Birmingham Polytechnic, leaving in 1982 to join GKN Axles as a production engineer. Tony then moved into sales and during the period 1984 to 1997, held various positions including technical sales engineer, sales manager, sales & marketing manager, and finally vp of sales at Licom Systems, a CAD/CAM software developer.
