Forget Mensa. I joined once when I moved to a new city in order to meet some people who I thought would enjoy intelligent conversation and activities. Not. They were a bunch of dull people. There was a group of people who represented the top 2% of the Mensa group, I forget the name, who claimed to be the elite of the elite. They offered me membership, but by then I had plenty of friends in my new city and turned them down.

The only time my Mensa membership, which I dropped after a year or two, came in handy was when I applied to teach a graduate course at the local seminary. They took one look at "Memberships: Mensa" and hired me on the spot. If I were in certain professions I can see that it might be a useful edge, but as to the people in it being more interesting or better conversationalists than anybody else, not what I experienced.
