G'day all - Sam, thanks for the post on Taiwan. I don't follow Taiwan much these days, but it is indeed a very puzzling move by President Lee. However, I seriously doubt he was trying to drive a wedge between China and the US. The relationship is in its nadir, and the risk, so it is seen through my amateurish view, far outweighs its utility.

OTOH, one has to assume there are some purposes. What are they? Is it really negotiation tactics? Or is it done for domestic consumption? Incidentally, if memory serves, President Lee is a taiwanese [I could be wrong.] It could be a factor, even though the taiwanese/KMT issue has been largely toned down in the past 2 decades.
