i think you are right, blended approaches will work
on the other hand, i think that visual (pc/pda/cell phone/2 way pager) display will be used more frequently than voice

in my mind simple text/graphics can convey much more
voice will be an enhancement, but obviously can't be replaced in two way communications

voxml, too much overhead, negotiating bodies, too much to rewrite
easier to have a 'parallel' site specifically optimized for voice/text interface and leave the 'eye candy' separate, imho

RIMM, MOT has a competitive product, haven't used either, yet
too expensive, i expect price to be cut in half by next year

3COM is trying to be a 'conversion' portal by getting sites to 'funnel' their info to the 3COM 'Palm' site so they can transmit to wireless pda's...this approach will be a lot less overhead than voxml
of course, large sites will do this themselves and not be limited to PALM format

Watch for Apple :)

but Mark, how do we make some money on this stuff :)
