And real retailers have to make a profit- they can't rely on the daytrading hordes to provide them with a fantastic amount of money to burn through.

I'm sure amazon will probably send you a 15 dollar gift certificate whenever you return an item, just to make you happy. The only thing that matters is keeping "the dream" going long enough for insiders to quietly cash in their shares.
