Darren, are you saying that in addition to accessing any IP address that you might be aware of, that you can also do peer level viewing of files through the Microsoft Windows networking capabilities?

The type of problem that the article speaks to, unless I'm mistaken, is unique to shared media (pre-router) environments where the user community is on a common LAN-like network before they hit the router. I think that TCP port level filtering in routers might preclude the kinds of sessions discussed beyond the first router. At least, that has been my understanding, but like I say, I could be wrong. Please clarify your views on this.

There are also certain flavors of DSL, as the article points out, which employ collision domains in their makeup, that are susceptible to this kind of breach as well. They use concentration in the DSL aggregation unit (DSL concentrators) as opposed to ATM which is used in DSL Access Mulitplexers (DSLAMs). In the latter case the DSLAM uses an ATM cell-switched fabric in the backplane, instead of frames which are common to Ethernet. Corrections welcome.

Regards, Frank Coluccio
