AMDs Dresdener Werk "Fab 30" ist auf Erfolgskurs. Geschäftsführer Hans Deppe konnte frohgemut vermelden, daß die ersten K6-Pilot-Prozessoren mit Kupfer-Interconnects erfolgreich vom Stapel gelaufen sind. Über die Ausbeute gibt es zwar keine Aussagen, aber in Dresden ist man zuversichtlich, bereits gegen Jahresende Kupfer-Athlons "backen" zu können, die möglicherweise 1 GHz Takt überschreiten. Damit würde man dem Konkurrenten Intel weiter enteilen.

Die 1,7 Milliarden Mark teure Fab 30 wurde mit großer finanzieller Unterstützung der EU, des Bundes und des Landes Sachsen in knapp zwei Jahren aus dem sächsischen Boden gestampft. Im Februar begannen die inzwischen 850 Mitarbeiter mit den ersten (kupferlosen) Wafer-Starts. Bis zum Vollbetrieb Ende nächsten Jahres will man die Mitarbeiterzahl noch mehr als verdoppeln.
