I adore Cold Comfort Farm- it is an elegant satire, which should be viewed if only for the line about how the protagonist is going to experience life and then in middle age write a novel as good as Persuasion. Perhaps you did not understand it? It sends up every English manor novel ever written- and has a spoof of several conventional English literary figures- the flapper, the steady guy/boyfriend, the elusive wild nature gal, the son of the manor, the randy country boys, etc etc. I own it and watch it often.
Enchanted April just makes me feel good. I love the language, the ideas, and the walking stick at the end. It is a fairy tale- but I won't hold that against it. Repo Man- you either like it or you hate it. I happen to like it. This is Spinal Tap is brilliant. Perhaps you aren't in to satires? I say this, because This is Spinal Tap has the same emotional balance (kookiness)as Cold Comfort Farm has for me. Repo Man is also a satire- sort of. And since you seem to like the "serious" movies but not the satires- although you did like My Dinner with Andre, but that isn't as silly as Spinal Tap or Cold Comfort, I wonder if for some reason they don't appeal to you. |
