I understand that all animals of the feline sort have a very high count of virulent bacteria in their mouths. This extends to larger cats -- in the Amazon, it is said that a bite from a large cat (jaguar etc.) will infect quickly and terribly without immediate recourse to powerful antibiotics, and may be fatal.

The implicit message here is that if you have any regard whatsoever for those of the avian persuasion in your neck of the woods, you will brush your cat's teeth regularly. This, I should add, makes for an interesting half an hour or so. A pair of elbow-length pot holders is highly recommended.
