I suppose it is possible that I did not "get" Cold Comfort Farm, although I have read a couple of Jane Austen's novels, and my wife has read more, and neither of us cared for it. It is true that I am not really into Edwardian literature, so maybe that is the deficit. I am not much of a fan of Merchant/Ivory or Masterpiece Theatre, either, which is why I put off Persuasion and Emma, for fear that they would irritate me. Enchanted April is a fairy tale, certainly, and Miranda Richardson is one of the best actresses around, but it is too precious for me. My objection can be summarized in one phrase:"Tub of love"...Repo Man was awhile back, so the details elude me, but I recall that it struck me as pointless....My problem with This is Spinal Tap was that it was so good a parody of the rockumentary form that it had little satirical punch. It may as well have been a real film about a dumbbell heavy metal band...Let's see, on the topic of silliness, I liked the Full Monty, I love Dr. Strangelove, I am a fan of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and I love the Marx Brother's. I didn't find Spinal Tap or Cold Comfort Farm silly, I found them inert. Maybe I came at them from the wrong angle, but that was the problem... |
