wish i were there, San Fran that is. no way on earth i can be in any road show anywhere, anytime. :-)

i am increasingly comfortable with no "huge" run-up on IDTC prior to NTOP's debut. no huge run-up prior to IPO, no big sell-off afterwards. however, i'm expecting IDTC to rise with NTOP once it starts trading.

AudioCodes recently announced a new voice coder that is much less bandwidth consuming but performs equivalently as the G.711 coder that is used in IDT's H.323 gateways. i wonder if IDT's gateways can adapt this AudioCodes new coder to save bandwidth without sacrificing quality as traffic growth warrants.

<< AudioCodes' voice coder exhibits high tolerance to packet loss
8 July 1999

AudioCodes today announced voice quality test results performed by COMSAT Laboratories for NetCoder, a voice coder specifically designed by AudioCodes for VoIP.
According to test results, NetCoder exhibits high robustness to packet loss, which is the major cause for quality of service degradation in Voice over IP networks.

Test results further show that NetCoder preserves quality and exhibits high performance at packet loss rates of up to 8% and tandem operation when compared to the standard G.723.1 and the G.729A coders.

In addition, NetCoder supports flexible bandwidth management and dynamic transmission rate change when bandwidth is strained under congested network conditions. Since early 1999, NetCoder has been deployed by several of AudioCodes customers, including Lucent Technologies, Hypercom Network Systems and Clarent Corporation.

NetCoder is available on all AudioCodes voice over packet processors and on AudioCodes TrunkPack-VoIP communication boards. It operates at bit rates ranging from 4.8 kbps to 9.6 kbps, in 800 bit increments, which can be changed on the fly for every packet sent.

In tests conducted by COMSAT Laboratories, NetCoder performance in high packet-loss network conditions were found to be better than both G.723.1 and G.729A at frame erasure rates of 3%, 5% and 8%. The tests also demonstrate that NetCoder's performance at 9.6kbps is indistinguishable from G.711 PCM, which is used in the public telephony network. >>
