I wouldn't worry too much about brevity-- people who want the first post will read it, others will blow right by. How about this addition to your second battery paragraph:

"NiMh batteries from GM-Ovonic and Ovonic royalty paying licensees are also finding their way into regular automobiles (see SI posts 3293 and 3433) and other industrial applications. Regular autos are undergoing their first step up in voltage since the step from 6v to 12v in the 1950's. NiMh may be the only appropriate battery chemistry, which would prove to be a huge source of royalties for Ovonic and a huge source of product revenue for GM/Ovonic"
